The effects of poor air quality are usually discussed in terms of our lungs and heart. But emerging research points to another important connection: the air we breathe may also affect the brain and our mental health.
Fine particulate matter such as PM2.5 can enter the bloodstream and contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress within the brain. Studies are increasingly associating exposure to air pollution with higher rates of anxiety, depression, sleep disruption, and psychiatric hospitalizations.
Wildfire smoke can intensify that burden. In addition to the biological effects of smoke exposure, visible haze, disrupted routines, evacuation concerns, and the uncertainty surrounding wildfires can create significant psychological stress—even for people living far from the fire itself.
In our latest article, we explore what researchers are discovering about the connection between air quality and mental health, why Colorado communities may be particularly affected, and how awareness and coordinated care can help.

I have referred many people to Dr. Richmonds's practice for medication and they have always had a positive experience. Dr. Richmond is passionate about helping people feel better and has a great tram of prescribers. The practice has immediate openings and in-person appointments. I highly recommend this practice for medication evaluation and management. ❤️1

I’ve had nothing but an excellent experience working with Jessica Bradburn and the rest of the team. I always feel supported and well educated on my options. Jessica takes the time to understand your concerns and is extremely patient. Yoxelin is also always super helpful if I reach out with any questions.

About Psyche PCAdvanced Psychiatric Care. Collaborative Approach. |
|
| Psyche PC was founded by Dr. Jeffrey Richmond, a board-certified psychiatrist dedicated to helping adults access innovative, evidence-based psychiatric care in Colorado.
Our practice provides medication management, Spravato® (Esketamine), and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for patients experiencing treatment-resistant mental health conditions. We do not offer psychotherapy, but we work collaboratively with referring providers to support each patient’s treatment plan and continuity of care.
As new psychiatric treatments continue to move through research and regulatory review, Psyche Denver remains focused on what patients can safely access now: compassionate, clinically guided care delivered in a professional setting. |
